Guidelines For Computer Use
The Kent District Library provides open and free public access to computer software, CD-ROMs, the Internet, information databases and information in all formats. This service is offered to you as a way of enhancing the Library's print collections with computer resources and information networks from around the world.
The Library has established computer guidelines to enable the widespread use of computers. We ask you to comply with these guidelines so that all users can benefit from this technology service. Failure to follow these Computer Guidelines may result in the loss of computer privileges.
If complaints arise from patron use of the Internet, staff will evaluate the circumstances, in accordance with the Library’s Code of Behavior.
Staff Assistance:
To help you use these computer resources, the Library offers a variety of learning aids, including online tutorials, written sources and tip sheets. Staff will be happy to assist you in getting started. Computer classes are offered periodically at several branches for those needing more assistance.
Time Limits:
Use of all computers is on a first-come, first served basis. Access to the Internet is limited to 60 minutes per person (not per card number) per day. Time extensions may be given and the decision is left to the discretion of staff. All users must have a valid KDL or Lakeland library card to sign on to the computer to access the Internet. Visitors should see the librarian for more information.
All computers are shut down 5 minutes prior to closing.
Software/Computer Equipment:
Only computer equipment and software owned and previously installed by the Kent District Library may be used on KDL computers. Adding, deleting or modifying the installed hardware or software is not permitted. Personal files saved on the public hard drive are regularly deleted by Computer Services to conserve space.
E-mail accounts are available through free online e-mail sites such as Hotmail or Yahoo E-mail. These services are not part of the KDL computer system and are not supported by KDL.
In the event of an equipment failure, Library staff will work with you to reschedule a time and/or offer alternative sources for information.
Wireless Internet access is available at all branches with no time limits. This service is available to patrons that wish to use their personal laptops that are equipped with wireless technology to access the Internet.
The Library is not responsible for any damage or loss of data arising from the use of equipment, programs or other library materials.
The following software is pre-installed on all 60-minute* KDL terminals:
- Internet Explorer or Firefox
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)
- Windows Media Player
- QuickTime
- SonicRecordNow (CD burning software)
- Acrobat Reader
- iTunes
- Real Player
- Picasa 2 (Photo editor and organizer)
* 20-minute Express terminals include only Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, and Acrobat Reader.
Printing/Downloading:
The paper for the printers is supplied by the Kent District Library. The printing charge is 15 cents per page for black and white and $1.00 per page for color. Printing from the public workstations requires the patron to purchase a print card for $1.00. Additional money can then be added to the print card to pay for any copy and print charges incurred.
To download information, please bring your own USB flash drive. New flash drives may be purchased for $10.00 each at the circulation or locally designated desk.
Internet Access:
The Kent District Library provides public access to the Internet as a way of enhancing its existing collections with electronic resources from information networks around the world. While the Internet provides many valuable sources of information, users are reminded that some information on the Internet may not be accurate, complete, current, or confidential. The Library has no control over the information on the Internet, and cannot be held responsible for its content.
Internet access is filtered on library computers. Internet access through the wireless network is not filtered. The parents or legal guardians are responsible for their child’s reading, listening, and viewing of Library material, including the Internet.
What is a "PIN," and why do I need one?
A PIN is a unique four-digit number used in conjunction with your library card number. It assures that your record and computer use is secure, much as your bankcard PIN number does for your bank account. You must use your PIN each time you sign in to use a KDL computer. Your PIN is also needed to place materials on hold. See a KDL staff member if you have difficulty using your PIN.
Acceptable Use:
Library computers may only be used for legal purposes. Examples of unacceptable uses include but are not limited to the following:
- Display of sexually explicit or pornographic materials
- Harassment of other users or violation of their privacy
- Violation of copyright laws or software licensing agreements
- Damaging equipment software or data belonging to KDL or other users
A copy of the complete Kent District Library Acceptable Use Policy is available here.
Violation may result in the loss of Internet and/or library privileges. Illegal use of the computers may be subject to prosecution by local, state or federal authorities.
