I'm getting a "User not activated" or "No permission to copy document" error when transferring an eBook to a NOOK (or other eReader device)

These errors usually indicate that there is a problem with your Adobe ID activation. Both Adobe Digital Editions and your eReader must be activated using the same Adobe ID in order to transfer eBook files to the eReader. To check this and reset it if necessary, please perform these steps:

  1. To confirm Adobe Digital Editions is authorized properly, do the following:
    1. In Adobe Digital Editions, go to the Help menu and select Authorization Information
    2. If Adobe Digital Editions is authorized, move on to #2.
    3. If Adobe Digital Editions is not authorized, proceed through the setup assistant to authorize it with an Adobe ID.
  2. Reset the Adobe Digital Editions folder on the NOOK:
    1. Close Adobe Digital Editions
    2. Connect the NOOK to your computer
    3. Double-click your NOOK under My Computer or Computer
    4. Locate the folder .adobe-digital-editions and delete it
  3. Open Adobe Digital Editions and try transferring the eBook again. After the transfer, disconnect your NOOK. You should now be able to read the eBook on your device.

I'm getting a "E_ADEPT_REQUEST_EXPIRED" error when downloading an eBook

This error is usually caused by one or more of the following system settings:

  1. Incorrect clock time
  2. Incorrect date
  3. Incorrect time zone

Please check your device's time, date, and time zone to verify that they are correct in relation to your current location. Once you have updated your settings, try to download the eBook again.

How can I read PDF eBooks on my iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch?

The OverDrive mobile app for iOS does not support PDFs, but we have had patrons who have reported success using a third-party app known as Bluefire Reader.

The Bluefire Reader app and their instructions for downloading library eBooks onto your iPad can be found at http://www.bluefirereader.com/help/libraryBooks.html.

You'll need to install the Bluefire Reader app on your iPad (available from the App Store), and the free Adobe Digital Editions software on your computer. If you've downloaded library eBooks in the past, you may already have this program, but if not, it is a free download available from http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions.html. (Note that this is a different program than the Adobe Reader software used to read PDF files. This separate program supports the limited checkout periods needed for library eBook files.)

Both of these programs need to be authorized with an Adobe ID (your email address and a password). If you have not already set one up in the past, you'll be asked to do so during the installation process for the software. Please make sure to use the same information for the two programs (Bluefire Reader and Adobe Digital Editions).

After these programs are installed, you can log in to your account on the ebooks.kdl.org website and download your book. Then follow the instructions on the Bluefire Reader page to use iTunes to transfer the file to the Bluefire Reader app on your iPad.

Please note that this process is only necessary to read library eBooks that are in the Adobe PDF format. Those that are in the Adobe EPUB format can be downloaded directly to your iPad using the OverDrive Media Console app. (No syncing with iTunes on your computer required.)

How do I return eBooks early so I can check out more?
