Answers:
I'm getting a "User not activated" or "No permission to copy document" error when transferring an eBook to a Nook (or other eReader device)
These errors usually indicate that there is a problem with your Adobe ID activation. Both Adobe Digital Editions and your eReader must be activated using the same Adobe ID in order to transfer eBook files to the eReader. To check this and reset it if necessary, please perform these steps:
- To confirm Adobe Digital Editions is authorized properly, do the following:
- In Adobe Digital Editions, from the title list view, go to the Library menu and select Authorize Computer
- If Adobe Digital Editions is authorized, move on to #2.
- If Adobe Digital Editions is not authorized, proceed through the setup assistant to authorize it with an Adobe ID.
- Reset the Adobe Digital Editions folder on the Nook:
- Close Adobe Digital Editions
- Connect the Nook to your computer
- Under My Computer or Computer, open the drive associated with your device (likely named nook (X:) where X is the drive letter)
- Locate the folder .adobe-digital-editions and delete it
- Open Adobe Digital Editions. A Device Setup Assistance window should open, asking you to authorize your device. Click the Authorize Device button. If you do not see the Device Setup Assistance dialog, you may activate your device by selecting it on the left side of the screen and going to Options / Activate Device in the lower left corner of the Adobe Digital Editions window.
- Transfer the title to your device again
I'm getting a "E_ADEPT_REQUEST_EXPIRED" error when downloading an eBook
This error is usually caused by one or more of the following system settings:
- Incorrect clock time
- Incorrect date
- Incorrect time zone
Please check your device's time, date, and time zone to verify that they are correct in relation to your current location. Once you have updated your settings, try to download the eBook again.
How can I read PDF eBooks on my iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch?
The OverDrive mobile app for iOS does not support PDFs, but we have had patrons who have reported success using a third-party app known as Bluefire Reader.
The Bluefire Reader app and their instructions for downloading library eBooks onto your iPad can be found at http://www.bluefirereader.com/help/libraryBooks.html.
You'll need to install the Bluefire Reader app on your iPad (available from the App Store), and the free Adobe Digital Editions software on your computer. If you've downloaded library eBooks in the past, you may already have this program, but if not, it is a free download available from http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions. (Note that this is a different program than the Adobe Reader software used to read PDF files. This separate program supports the limited checkout periods needed for library eBook files.)
Both of these programs need to be authorized with an Adobe ID (your email address and a password). If you have not already set one up in the past, you'll be asked to do so during the installation process for the software. Please make sure to use the same information for the two programs (Bluefire Reader and Adobe Digital Editions).
After these programs are installed, you can log in to your account on the ebooks.kdl.org website and download your book. Then follow the instructions on the Bluefire Reader page to use iTunes to transfer the file to the Bluefire Reader app on your iPad.
Please note that this process is only necessary to read library eBooks that are in the Adobe PDF format. Those that are in the Adobe EPUB format can be downloaded directly to your iPad using the OverDrive Media Console app. (No syncing with iTunes on your computer required.)
How do I return eBooks early so I can check out more?
eBooks are automatically "returned" at the end of the checkout period. However, if you have reached your 15-item checkout limit, or just want to be considerate of others who may be waiting on hold, you can return your eBook files early by following these steps:
For Amazon Kindle or Kindle Apps
- Sign into your Kindle account at http://www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle
- Select the Actions button next to the eBook you want to return
- Click Return This Book
- Click Yes to verify that you want to return the eBook
- If you also wish to delete the eBook from your Kindle Library list, select the Actions button again and click Delete from Library
For Adobe Digital Editions + non-Kindle eReader (such as a NOOK):
- Open Adobe Digital Editions
- Select Library (in the upper left corner). The Adobe Digital Editions library is displayed
- Right-click (control-click for Mac) on the title you'd like to return
- Click Return Borrowed Item
- Click Return to verify that you want to return the eBook
For OverDrive Media Console Mobile App for iPad / iPhone:
- From the bookshelf, tap the + button next to the title you want to return.
- Tap Return / Delete to display the return options
- Tap Return then Delete to return the title back to the library
(Selecting Delete only will delete the title from your device, but you will still have it checked out)
For OverDrive Media Console Mobile App for Android:
- From the bookshelf, tap the + button next to the title you want to return.
- Tap Return / Delete to display the return options

(Selecting Delete only will delete the title from your device, but you will still have it checked out)
For OverDrive Media Console App for Windows 8:
- Right-click or swipe down on the title you want to return
- Select Return / Delete from the bottom ribbon to display the return options
- Select Delete and Return to return the title back to the library
(Selecting Delete but do not return will delete the title from your device, but you will still have it checked out)
