Read and Discuss!

In the past fifteen years, the Grandville Library’s Adult Book Discussion Group has read a wide range of titles – some loved by all and some?  not so much!  That’s what keeps things interesting, according to Librarian Cindy Holt, who has coordinated the group for ten years.  She doesn’t read the books beforehand, choosing to read them alongside the group’s members.  The year’s titles are selected during the summer and Cindy picks books known to be thought-provoking, with characters and situations that stimulate conversation.  The list usually includes the year’s "One Book, One County" title, as well as a non-fiction and classic book.  One of the best discussions ever by the group was about Mary Doria Russell’s Thread of Grace – and the book universally disliked?  We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver.  If you’re interested in joining the discussion, the group meets on the second Thursday of the month in the Grandville Library Program Room.  This year’s titles are:

September 13 – The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls

October 11 – The Nick Adams Stories by Ernest Hemingway

November 8 – The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

January 10 – The Book of Bright Ideas by Sandra Kring

February 14 – One Book, One County title (to be revealed on January 19)

March 13 – Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles

April 10 - Pomegranate Soup by Marsha Mekran

May 8 – Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
