BikeKDL refers to our commitment to cycling as recreation and transportation. Our bike-related services include our KDL Cruisers free bicycle rentals, our Bicycle Friendly Business℠ designation and our bicycle-oriented programming.
For the 2018 season, the Comstock Park, East Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kelloggsville, Kentwood, Krause Memorial in Rockford, Walker and Wyoming branches plus our Service and Meeting Center will have Breezer Uptown EX 8-speed bicycles available for checkout. Each KDL Cruiser comes with a basket, a bike lock and key. All bikes will have a diagonal, step-through crossbar.
The KDL Cruisers will be available from roughly May 1 to Oct. 31.
KDL Cruisers can be checked out to anyone age 18 or older with a KDL card in good standing and a photo ID. You'll be asked to sign a Bicycle Borrowing Agreement acknowledging financial responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged equipment. Adults will be allowed to sign waivers for children as long as the adult accompanies the children on the ride. Bikes are due back by closing of the branch's next business day. Overdue fees are $20/day.
Although Michigan law doesn't require bicyclists to wear a helmet, the library strongly recommends customers bring their own.
To find out how many bikes are available at each branch, check our catalog for availability.
A Bicycle-Friendly Business℠
In 2016, the League of American Bicyclists recognized our Service and Meeting Center with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Business℠ award, joining 1,265 local businesses, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies in 49 states and Washington, D.C., with the same designation.
The KDL Service and Meeting Center, right off of the White Pine Trail in Comstock Park, is the first KDL location to be recognized for a commitment to promote a bicycle-friendly environment for employees, guests and the community. The building is easily accessible by bike, provides secure bike parking and end-of-trip facilities, provides access to shared bicycles and has dedicated staff committed to bike-friendly improvements and promoting positive internal culture and community education.
