Have you been wanting to give audiobooks a try but aren’t sure where to start?
Audiobooks are great for so many reasons: they keep your hands (and eyes) free to work on other tasks, they can help struggling readers, they are super portable and in many cases, they can add another dimension to the story.
Here are some beginner-friendly audiobook recommendations:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling, narrated by Jim Dale
As a big Harry Potter fan myself, I found that the audiobooks added another dimension to the story. Jim Dale does a fantastic job of narrating the Harry Potter series, and the audiobooks are a great way to experience the series again or for the first time. Available on hoopla and Overdrive.
Yes Please by Amy Poehler, narrated by Amy Poehler
I love listening to memoirs, especially when they are narrated by the author. I found Amy Poehler's memoir Yes Please particularly funny. While she narrates the majority of it herself, she also brings in friends and family to read portions, which only adds to the humor. Available on hoopla.
Shakespeare: The World as Stage by Bill Bryson, narrated by Bill Bryson
Bill Bryson’s biography on William Shakespeare is packed with fascinating information on this famous poet’s life. I have listened to several of Bill Bryson’s books, and his narration is easy to understand and very soothing. Shakespeare: The World as Stage makes a great beginner audiobook — the information is still very understandable, and you will learn some great trivia facts to impress your friends with. Available on hoopla and Overdrive.
Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert, narrated by Adjoa Andoh
Get a Life, Chloe Brown is a contemporary romance that is so sweet and enjoyable. The writing style is very humorous, and the narrator has a wonderful accent that is very pleasing to listen to. Available on hoopla.
I hope you are inspired to give audiobooks a try. Downloading audiobooks to your phone or tablet is a convenient way to have your current read ready to go whenever you have a few minutes. Kent District Library offers several free apps to download audiobooks, including Libby by Overdrive and hoopla. Visit kdl.org/downloads for more information on how to get started.
