Now that the Skywalker saga has officially been concluded and the first season of "The Mandalorian" is wrapped up, many of us are finding ourselves a little lost. Perhaps you feel as though you’ve bid goodbye to an old friend. Perhaps you are overwhelmed with a sense of bittersweet satisfaction. Perhaps you are downright furious.
Or perhaps, in a tumult of emotions and questions (answered and unanswered), you find yourself longing for more stories from a galaxy far, far away. Fear not, my friend - the new canon of Star Wars novels has exploded in recent years. If you’re not sure where to start, here are some suggestions!
Aftermath by Chuck Wendig
This is the first book in a three-volume trilogy set in a post-Return of the Jedi power vacuum. It follows a diverse cast of characters that includes Norra Wexley -- a former Rebel pilot searching for her son, and Imperial Admiral Rae Sloane -- a loyal and sharp leader who must grapple with a host of problems in the years spanning the end of the civil war to the establishment of the New Republic.
Lost Stars by Claudia Gray
Set during the same time frame as Episodes IV, V, and VI, this young adult novel follows a pair of friends from the Outer Rim as they navigate their lives amid a polarizing civil war. Fresh and outstanding, it recontextualizes the original trilogy in a broader universe.
Thrawn by Timothy Zahn
A great start to another fascinating trilogy set between Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One. Back from the extended universe, Thrawn is a mysterious alien who rises to Imperial Grand Admiral despite uncertainties about his origins.
Resistance Reborn by Rebecca Roanhorse
The most recently published adult novel, this story examines the work of rebuilding the Resistance after its defeat and narrow escape in the Battle of Crait at the end of The Last Jedi. If you want to know what General Leia Organa, Poe Dameron, Rey and Finn were up to between Episodes VIII and IX, this is the book for you.
Bloodline by Claudia Gray
Set 20 years after Return of the Jedi, this novel follows Senator Leia Organa as she navigates Galactic turmoil and opposing political factions within the New Republic’s Galactic Senate in the years leading up to the rise of the First Order.
