I recently asked our staff to share the silly, weird and unexpected things they have found in returned library books. Let me tell you… people seem to be able to turn almost anything into a bookmark! The list made me laugh and feel slightly sick all at the same time. Don’t worry, I’ll save the nauseating list for another day (or maybe never).
Today’s list is all about money. The library is known for saving people lots of money… but not so much when they leave it between the pages of a borrowed book.
Here are seven cash-related items we have found in library materials. Good news! Our librarians are masters at tracking things down, including owners of lost money.
- A two-dollar bill
- A signed check, made out to cash, for over $100.
- A $1,000 check that was over a year old—and endorsed! Even wilder, the person we called to claim it didn’t even remember writing it!
- A whole pad of blank checks.
- A $2,000 check
- A $100 bill
- $200 cash
These things don’t just happen to our patrons, they happen to us too. Here is a story from one of our staff members:
About a week ago, I was reading a great little book called The Year of Less, about spending less and all the happiness that can bring. I had just finished the book and had it on my nightstand, waiting for my next day of work to return it. When I checked it in, it triggered a hold at the East Grand Rapids Branch and I sent it on its way without another thought. Over the course of the following weekend, my husband made the offhanded comment, “Oh you grabbed the $80 I put in that book you were reading, right?” I wish I could convey the look of horror on my face at that moment (my husband called it “dagger eyes”) as I slowly spoke the words, “What…are….you…talking…about?!!”
The story has a happy ending though as I called the East Grand Rapids Branch on Monday and even though the book had been placed on their hold shelf already, a staff member hustled over to the shelf and sure enough, found my $80 intact right where my husband put it. I was thankful---but not as much as my husband!
Cheers to finding treasures inside a book... figuratively and literally!
