Just in time for the warmer weather, KDL now offers bikes for checkout!
Sixteen of our branches plus our Service Center have four Breezer Uptown EX 8-speed bicycles available for circulation. Each bike comes with a basket, a bike lock and key. Most branches offer two styles of bikes, those with a horizontal crossbar and those with a more diagonal, step-through crossbar.
“A ‘bike culture’ is growing in the county and offering circulating bikes to KDL patrons supports this great effort and brings awareness to biking whether it’s for fitness or enjoyment,” says Michelle Boisvenue-Fox, Director of Innovation and User Experience at KDL. She adds, “It’s been fun to talk about this new service with our community partners. Their eyes light up and they get excited. It’s one more thing for them to fall in love with at KDL.”
KDL Cruisers are available for checkout to anyone age 18 or older with a KDL card in good standing. Participants must sign a borrower's agreement and waiver. Bikes check out for one day and must be returned before the library's closing time. Although Michigan law doesn't require bicyclists to wear a helmet, the library strongly recommends customers bring their own. This service is not offered at the Spencer or Alpine Township branches because they are both located on extremely busy roads, which is a safety concern.
While the bikes have been available for only a short time, the most popular use of KDL Cruisers have been from customers eager to take a ride during their lunch break. Many users also expressed an interest in checking out bikes for when family or friends visit, so they can go on rides together.
