After being ridiculed and bullied at school Kya takes refuge in the marshes where she becomes the “Marsh Girl.” Rumors and tales surround the Marsh Girl, but when a dead body is found in the marsh she is the first suspect. The story switches from the past to the present to tell Kya’s story and solve this murder mystery. This book begins with suspense and will leave you unable to put the book down. While you are waiting to read “Where the Crawdads Sing” try “The Death of Bees” by Lisa O’Donnell. This story is about two sisters with neglectful parents who one day are found dead. The sisters bury their parents in the back yard in an attempt to hide their parent’s death and avoid being sent to foster care. Written from the sister’s perspective as well as their neighbor, who suspects that something is amiss, the story follows the girls attempt to evade the authorities while revealing the family’s sordid secrets.
Another great read is “The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope” in which Evelyn is sent to live with a family where she finds a burned man, or so she thinks, in the field. The follows the development of her relationship with this individual and how loving someone does not always mean that you really know them.
If you are more interested in solving murder or a book with suspense “The Neighborhood” might be the book for you. In this book the editor of a salacious expose magazine winds up dead after running an article with pictures of a high profile business man’s past affair. Now the staff of the magazine are running their biggest expose yet while trying to solve the murder. Another good mystery is “My Sunshine Away” where an unspeakable crime is committed and shatters the illusions of an idyllic neighborhood for a man newly in love with the girl across the street.
