Local Quilters Georgia Farr and Erica Millbrook will describe the origins and creation of the Underground Railroad quilt. These quilts reportedly were used to guide escaping slaves on the journey North when encountered hanging on a line at a “station house”. The patterns and colors spoke a secret language to the “conductors” who were bringing slaves to freedom. These experts host the Baxter Quilt Show and support the elevation of the quilting craft and its rich place in African American culture. Presented in partnership by Grand Rapids African American Museum & Archives.
