Reserve your spot by calling 616-233-0283. One out of three older adults fall each year and 60% are afraid of falling. This fear often leads to an increased risk of falling, isolation, depression, and inactivity. This 8-week program meets two hours per week and helps many older adults learn ways to manage and conquer their fear of falling, leading to less falls and a more active and engaged lifestyle. In partnership with Senior Neighbors.

The Next Nexus: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Summit is a forward-focused event, featuring discussion of emerging trends and opportunities. Speakers will help participants cast their vision ahead of the curve while sharing best practices and practical tactics.

Register

Why attend? What will be the key takeaways?

Guests will share best practices and become inspired in new ways to increase the equity, diversity and inclusion of their organizations. This is based on the premise that diversity has multiple dimensions including (but not limited to) race, religion, age, gender, politics and accessibility. Our goal is for guests to leave with ideas and resources that they can put into practice.

Who should attend?

Executives, directors, human resources professionals and all other managers who want their organization to be as equitable, diverse and inclusive as possible. Attendees from libraries, businesses and other non-profit organizations are welcome.

Registration

Registration is $25 per person and includes lunch. For those who cannot attend in person, this event will be streamed online with a $5 registration fee. All participants (in person and online) will be provided with a copy of Year of Learning, a spiral-bound 100+ page workbook that guides individuals through an exploration and expansion of their understanding and action. Register online and choose either in-person or online attendance.

Agenda

8:30 AM – Registration and morning refreshments (coffee, tea, fruit, pastries)

9:00 AM – Welcome (Lance Werner, Executive Director, Kent District Library)

9:15 AM Equity Design at the Seattle Public Library or Building equity into the DNA of Your Organization (Marcellus Turner, Executive Director and Chief Librarian, Seattle Public Library)

For the Seattle Public Library, there has long been interest in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion, but our efforts became more formalized with our 2014/15 Community Engagement Advisory Group. This effort led to the identification of a vision statement and guiding principles that have led the Library to engage more deeply and thoughtfully with our community. By taking a learning approach accompanied by deep listening and prioritizing equity, SPL has systematically evolved the way we address equity in almost every aspect of our work: priority setting, program design, materials selection, contracting, budgeting and expansion of open hours, just to name a few.

  • Overview of the SPL Approach – Marcellus Turner
  • An introduction to Community Listening – TBD

10:30 AM – Break

10:45 AM – Definitions of equity, diversity and inclusion (conducted by SPL)

11:45 AM – Lunch and networking

12:45 PM A Year of Learning (Michelle Boisvenue-Fox, Director of Programming, Outreach and Collection Services and Sara Proano, Community Engagement Manager, Kent District Library)

1:45 PM – Guest speaker TBD

2:45 PM – Break

3:00 PM – Panel discussion

  • Graci Harkema - Diversity & Inclusion Director, Founders Brewing
  • B. Afeni McNeely Cobham, PhD - Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer / Executive Director Woodrick Center, Grand Rapids Community College
